If you've never heard of Napster, then you've probably been on a different
planet for the last five years. File sharing networks,
such as the revolutionary server that was/is Napster,
provide anyone who has access to the Internet with a venue
through which they can search for and download
practically any song that has ever existed. There
continues to be a great deal of controversy surrounding
the legality of such file sharing networks. Certain musicians/groups
such as Metallica have sought legal action to put a stop
to the copyright infringement that exists behind the downloading
of free MP3's. Proponents of file sharing networks believe
that these services are no different than someone recording
songs off the radio, and are simply a part of changing
times. They also argue that the cost to musicians is not
too extreme, noting that most downloaders are simply looking
to test out certain types of music, before purchasing.
Napster was forced out of business following nationwide
coverage. Not surprisingly, this did little to thwart
the free MP3 industry, as several new networks such as
Kazaa (recently in the news) and Scour simply took the
place of Napster. The free MP3 controversy will undoubtedly
continue.
