The only thing better and easier than downloading music is doing it for free. $17 for a mediocre
CD, or the songs you really want through free downloads.
Although there are many music download pay-sites throughout the Internet including the revamped
Napster server, there are probably even more sites/programs through which music can be downloaded
for free. I've followed the natural progression, starting with Cute FTP and audiogalaxy, followed
by the Napster revolution. When Napster made national headlines and got shut down, the agent of
choice became Scour, and when it disappeared, Gnuttela and Kazaa followed closely behind. After the
recent arrest of a 12-year old girl for using Kazaa to download music
, I have since rid myself of the
program. Where the future will take me, I know not, but rest assure, the music will be downloadable and
it will be free.
Services such as Napster, Scour & Kazaa, are simply made up of a central
server in which its users' files are stored for community
distribution. When you log onto these servers, you are
logging into their server. There are other services, however,
called peer-to-peer networks, that directly link two users
to one another, so as to exchange any number of file types.
Examples of these services include Gnutella, Cute FTP
and OpenNap to name a few.
