Ten years ago, if you told someone that you had just burned a CD of MP3's, they'd look at you like you were from Mars. Today, the term MP3 is as common as the term music itself. The music downloading revolution has captured today's youth through the increased commonality of high-speed Internet connections. Dependent on the speed of your connection, you can download MP3's from the Internet in a matter of seconds. MP3 converters, CD burning software, and large-scale servers such as Napster and Kazaa, have made it simple for the average Internet/Computer user to compile listings of their favorite music and transfer it onto an audio CD format for use in most standard CD players.

The MP3 player has become so common, in fact, that many cars are now fitted with MP3 compatible CD players. Audio CD's are generally of .WAV file type, which is quite large. MP3's are much smaller files than .WAV's, so whereas a CD might contain 20 .WAV files, the same CD might hold 200 MP3's.

This same trend is seen in MP3 players themselves. Whereas Rio players used to be the most popular brand in terms of MP3 players, most tech brands now offer MP3 players of their own, producing a large list ranging from Sony and Panasonic to Nomad and Casio. Apple Computers has recently gained the stronghold that Rio once held over the MP3 player market through their innovative I-Pod technology. The I-Pod MP3 player is more of a portable hard-drive, capable of holding anywhere from 5GB to 20GB of MP3's and other file types. This is such a breakthrough when you consider the juxtaposition: whereas someone might have had to carry around their CD player and their large CD collection, someone else is walking around with their entire music collection inside something that is smaller than their wallet.

MP3's and MP3 players are the future of music technologies. The current minimalist trend that is sweeping consumer culture is leading in the direction where one's cell phone will soon act as phone, palm pilot, MP3 player, digital camera and personal computer.
